The Future of Metaverses

A shared virtual world called a metaverse is being developed to enable everyone to lead a meaningful life, work, and access content. Metaverses will be built using universal protocols and can be privately owned or open to everyone. The metaverse will be like an infinite open map of a game, but instead of having objective-based missions and characters, players will be able to make their own decisions about how to use the resources and create worlds of their own.

One major advantage to a gaming metaverse is the abundance of user-generated content and virtual environments. The game has been used to host concerts by Ariana Grande, movie trailers, and music debuts. It also serves as an entry point for players to explore new technologies and virtual experiences. For example, the game Minecraft is an excellent environment for testing new VR and AR mechanics. Its popularity has led to an explosion of metaverse participation. But there are many questions regarding the future of metaverses.

A lot of companies are creating digital twins of their products and offering them to players as virtual goods. These digital goods have become very popular with players, and one game, Landlord Go, has 90,000 players. In another virtual world called Decentraland, people can buy and sell real-life items, like land, and play games in this space. A digital plot of land sold for $2.5 million in 2021. This is just one example of how the metaverse economy is evolving.
